All About You

Saint Louis University, a Catholic, Jesuit institution dedicated to student learning, research, and service, seeks dynamic applicants who can engage and inspire a diverse student body as an adjunct instructor in the Theatre & Dance program of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. This one-semester position ranges from August 21-December 17, 2024 with the potential for renewal.

The Theatre & Dance program offers an undergraduate major and minor in Theatre and a minor in Dance. SLU's Theatre & Dance program collaborates as a theatrical company, fostering commitment to our community while strengthening student abilities in performance, design, direction, dramaturgy, and management. The dance minor investigates the expressive potential of dance.

This position entails teaching DANC 2020 Hip-Hop Dance, contingent upon sufficient course enrollments.

Course details: This course will be an introduction to the fundamentals of hip hop, jazz funk, house dance and other related dance styles. This course is designed to introduce students to the various elements of these styles - the history, terminology, technique, core movement concepts, and prominent dance figures - and for students to experience these elements through dancing, observation, research, discussion, and choreography. This course will also explore the culture and music of hip-hop and other related styles of dance such as jazz funk and house dance.

Adjunct Instructors are responsible for course planning, syllabus preparation, instruction, and working in a learning management system such as Canvas. In addition, adjunct faculty are responsible for student evaluation, grading, and timely and accurate submission of required information related to instruction.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for working within a community of diverse student, faculty, staff, and professional populations. Required Qualifications:

Candidates must:

  • Have five years (minimum) demonstrated teaching experience in Hip-Hop and related dance in an educational setting.
  • Hold a BA or other undergraduate degree.
  • Have an ability to work with students with diverse levels of dance experience.
  • Be skilled at bringing knowledge of the practice, culture, and history of Hip-hop and related dance forms into the classroom.
  • Be prepared to plan a course syllabus, learning objectives, and assessment for student performance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hold an MFA degree in Dance or related field.
  • Experience working with college students who are minors in Dance and non-minors from a variety of other disciplines.
  • Experience working in a university setting.
