Summary

The Tax, Trust and Estates (TT&E) Paralegal provides support for all matters managed by both Partners and Associates. Primary responsibilities are preparation of probate court documents, preparation of gift and estate tax returns and related documents, document and file management, client communication and information gathering, organizing materials and schedules for lawyers and clients related to client matters. The TT&E Paralegal works under the direct supervision of the attorneys in the specific practice area on a day to day basis.

Required Education & Experience

  • Completion of either of the following:
    • (a) Bachelor's degree or (b) Associate's degree and minimum of 1 year law firm experience in a Paralegal capacity, or 2 to 5 years of complex law-related experience under the supervision of an Attorney or Senior Paralegal;
    • AND, in addition to (b), completion of an educational program for Paralegals approved by the American Bar Association ("ABA") or offered by an accredited institution which follows ABA guidelines for Paralegal programs.

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Experience in Tax, Trust and Estates preferred.
  • Law Firm experience preferred.

Essential Functions

  • Paralegal (75%)
    • Manage and organize all aspects of documents, files, and databases associated with each specific case/matter assigned by primary attorney.
    • Preparation of probate filings, gift/estate tax return preparation, corporate, financial and/or real estate documents, estate planning documents.
    • Prepare fiduciary income tax returns for estates and trusts.
    • Prepare federal estate tax returns.
    • Ensure that attorneys working on case/matter have all necessary information available to them in a timely manner.
    • Maintain all physical elements of the case/matter in an organized, efficient, and accurate manner.
    • Provide both attorney(s) and client(s) with information necessary for business process, decision making, and review in a timely manner.
    • Conduct various document searches and factual research.
    • Probate Court filings.
    • Anticipate attorney and client needs related to matters or cases under management.
    • Delegate effectively and as appropriate to Legal Administrative Assistants, support staff, and/or Case Clerks working on the case/matter.
    • Handle all communications, whether oral and written, in a prompt and professional manner ensuring that information is transferred in an accurate and thorough manner.
    • Act as a liaison among various internal departments as well as with outside agencies.
    • Meet billable hour requirement of 1550 per year.
  • General and Administrative (25%)
    • Time entry, scanning, e-mailing, etc.
    • Assist in Firm marketing for practice area.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. While performing the responsibilities of the position, these work environment characteristics are representative of the environment the person in this position will encounter. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work in a professional, fast paced office environment that may require additional hours to complete work.

These physical demands are representative of the physical requirements necessary for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.
