Responsibilities

St. Louis Behavioral Medicine Institute offers a clinical practicum in mental health. All practicum are nine-month training experiences. The approximate start date is subject to some variation based on the student's academic schedule. Practicum experiences are typically 9-10 hours per week. We do not offer a three-month or one-semester practicum.

Practicum in Dialectical Behavior Therapy Program:The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Program providers at SLBMI have been trained in formal Marsha Linehan DBT approach. Postdoctoral fellows are expected to be active members of a DBT consultation team, as well as provide treatment in the Adult DBT IOP and DBT Outpatient Group/Individual Services. This program is led by Claudia Charles, Ph.D.

Practicum student application deadline is February 24, 2024.


Qualifications

  • Qualifications: Students must be currently enrolled in a graduate program in clinical or counseling psychology, clinical social work, or another mental health discipline.
  • Number of Positions: Three to four
  • Hours/Schedule: Placement requirement is nine to ten hours per week. Attempts are made to devise schedules that accommodate each student's additional academic commitments.
  • Starting/Ending Dates: All practicum are nine-month training experiences. The approximate start date is September 1st and the approximate end date is May 31st, subject to some variation based on the student's academic schedule. We do not offer a three-month or one-semester practicum.
  • Clinical Responsibilities: Students will administer psychological interventions under the direction of a licensed psychologist and other licensed mental health professionals. In addition, students may co-lead therapy groups, attend and participate in group supervision and clinical rounds, and conduct intake screenings. Students are also invited to attend all continuing education programs provided at the Institute.
  • Supervision: All students will receive one to two hours, per week, of group supervision by a licensed psychologist. Regularly scheduled individual supervision is typically provided by postdoctoral fellows in clinical psychology. The hours and frequency of supervision depend upon the number of hours involved in the student's practicum. Students will also receive input and supervision from a multidisciplinary team of professionals on a case-by-case basis.
  • Funding: SLBMI does not provide a stipend for students. Occasionally, students have been able to obtain outside funding.
  • Research Opportunities: The practicum is a clinical experience and research is not required. However, opportunities are available for participation in research for those who are interested.
