The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellow for Art of the Ancient Americas

About the Collection: The Saint Louis Art Museum features one of the most comprehensive and distinguished collections of Ancient American art in the United States. The collection is comprised of more than 4,500 artworks, over half of which are Mesoamerican. Ancient art from North America is represented by selections of Mississippian and Southwest works, and there are singular strengths from the Andes and the Caribbean.

Summary: The main purpose of this Fellowship is to lead the preparation of a major publication cataloguing the Museum's important collection of art of the ancient Americas. During the 3-year term, the Fellow will collaborate with colleagues in the Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, with staff throughout the Museum, and colleagues and collectors in the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with the department head and museum colleagues across departments to develop and execute a major publication cataloguing the Museum's important collection of art of the ancient Americas; including but not limited to developing a publication prospectus and checklist; curatorial research and writing; the assessment of conservation needs; coordination of photography; and the development of interpretation and programs.
  • Review, evaluate, and catalogue a collection of ancient American art.
  • Participate in the day-to-day activities of the Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, including but not limited to collections research, collections gallery development, and exhibition and program planning.
  • Interpret and provide information on works in the collection and the exhibition through lectures, docent training, and outreach activities.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications: M.A. in Ancient Americas art history, archaeology, or related field required; Ph.D. and area specialization strongly preferred. Minimum two years previous museum experience is also desired in addition to a demonstrated commitment to scholarship through research, exhibitions and publications.

Work Hours: 3-year Limited Term, Full-Time (37.5 hours/week). Benefits eligible on first day of employment.
