This opportunity is located within our AFB International business, the global science and technology leader in pet food palatability. We develop and produce a full range of liquid and dry palatability enhancers using high-quality ingredients proven to optimize companion animal response and consumption.

Job Description

Summary:

Plans and manages all aspects of the organization's safety, health and environmental program, holding direct responsibility for compliance with global safety, health and environmental regulations, as well as company policies, which are designed to exceed compliance standards, within AFB's global facilities by performing the following duties.

Job Duties:

Develop an EHS roadmap and departmental strategic initiatives which align with the organization's values and strategy.

Directs EHS efforts at the global level; develops and implements global programs and policies for monitoring and preventing chemical hazards, physical hazards, and environmental hazards at the facility, as well as managing workers compensation.

Drives best in class (top quartile compared to industry standards) EHS initiatives and works cross departmentally to ensure that all programs and policies, which align with global standards, are being deployed at the regional and functional level.

Direct the development of safety, health and environmental auditing tools and global and environmental safety management systems for compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements.

Coordinates internal and external global risk audits to assess facility compliance with company and regulatory requirements.

Creates internal report outs on findings and partners with facility leaders on the development and execution of subsequent corrective action plans.

Reviews and prepares information for public or regulatory meetings regarding environmental health and safety matters.

Develops data collection systems and analyzes data relating to safety, health and environmental risks to identify and execute on global improvement efforts.

Maintains and provides input to hazardous communications, including maintenance of material safety data sheet systems, chemical inventories and chemical approvals.

Identifies and provides global standards for EHS systems, equipment and monitoring instruments.

Partners with Engineering to establish global EHS design standards.

Implements or recommends control measures for exposure to hazardous materials or conditions.

Provides technical guidance to management and direct reports regarding safety, health and environmental risk and presents appropriate risk mitigation options, including cost and risk analyses.

Monitors the company's health standards and directs the organization with respect to compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Develops metrics and maintains visual management systems to track and evaluate EHS performance and drive problem solving efforts.

Directs incident investigation and incident prevention programs on a global level, in an effort to minimize injuries and lost time costs. Reviews incident reports, driving to root cause and evaluating the need for potential changes to current global policies and procedures.

Partners with Human Resources to manage workers compensation cases and injury management.

Prepares and maintains a global EHS budget and assist management in the preparation of regional EHS budgets, including CAPEX budget management for EHS projects.

Actively engages in global Management of Change (MOC) processes and engineering stage gate discussions to identify and mitigate potential employee or business risks.

Develops and facilitates environmental health and safety training that can be deployed globally, including Operator training and leadership training and communication programs that will strengthen leadership's understanding of company policy and compliance standards.

Creates and deploys a global safety training matrix for required training by job function and region.

Maintains global compliance calendars for environmental permitting and reporting requirements and ensures adherence.

Maintains a close working relationship with all functional, site and regional EHS leaders.

Partners with functional and site leaders to identify and select qualified candidates for departmental roles.

Foster retention and engagement of team members and support individual development.

This role will also have responsibility of managing workplace EHS for the St. Charles facility.

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in safety, industrial hygiene, or related field, Masters preferred; and ten or more years of broad related experience in US and international environmental, health and safety management; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience in a manufacturing setting is strongly preferred. Prior experience with Lean Six Sigma systems and tools highly desired.

  • Knowledge of safety practices applicable to food research laboratory environments and ability to follow designated safety procedures.

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills to interact effectively with peers, co-workers, operators, scientists, technicians, supervisors, customers and vendors as required.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

  • Proficient skill level in MS Office Applications such as Word and Excel.

This job will require you to be in St. Charles, Missouri, or open to relocating to St. Charles, Missouri.
