Summary of Position

A Cyclotron Engineer serves as one of a group of specialists / engineers who are responsible for all technical aspects pertaining to the monitoring, training, planning, and execution of operations, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and upgrade project activities for multiple particle accelerators (cyclotrons). This position must actively manage these activities within the constraints of limited production downtime and available department resources, in order to meet internal customer demands for bulk radiopharmaceutical production.

Work Schedule: Saturday - Wednesday 8:00pm - 6:30am.Ability to work overtime as needed.Occasionally will be needed to provide vacation coverage for shift coverage.

Essential Functions
  • Monitor and direct daily operations and routine maintenance of cyclotrons and support equipment.
  • Perform, coordinate, and lead department troubleshooting activities for cyclotron equipment.
  • Will plan, organize, schedule, direct and/or execute major maintenance, repairs, and upgrade project work for cyclotrons and associated support systems.
  • On a rotating basis, must serve as the primary after hours point of contact to site leadership, responsible for the timely communication and response to any cyclotron equipment problems which includes performing the final technical assessment, directing (shift personnel) and/or performing emergency troubleshooting and repairs if needed.
  • Serving as one of the resident technical experts and mentors for cyclotron operations and maintenance will monitor and lead technical training and support to other Cyclotron Operations personnel.
  • Develop and author preventative maintenance and operations procedures for cyclotrons and support equipment.
  • Develop and promote cyclotron operations equipment design and process improvements which serve to improve reliability, increase output, reduce cost, and reduce radiation exposure.
  • Must provide accurate and timely record keeping of maintenance and repair work performed.
  • Must frequently identify critical parts and determine the appropriate on-site inventory levels to maintain.
  • Guide and direct non-technically skilled site personnel from outside the department who occasionally assist with work, in their performance of mechanical repairs to cyclotrons.
  • Monitor trend analysis and tracking of cyclotron performance data.
  • Ensure a safe and quality working environment through training, awareness and compliance with all safety guidelines, policies, procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Collateral duties and special projects assigned by supervisor and/or other site or corporate leadership.
Requirements
  • Requires an Associate Degree in Electronics or a related field. A Bachelor Degree in Engineering, or Physics is preferred.
  • Three or more years of relevant experience in component level electronics troubleshooting and repairs is required.
  • Three or more yearsof cyclotron (particle accelerator) experience in the production of radiopharmaceutical products is preferred.
  • Required experience in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing the following:
    • High power RF systems (high HF through low VHF ranges)
    • A variety of general purpose test equipment and bench testing electronic system components
    • Advanced test equipment such as RF spectrum and network analyzers
    • Solid state and vacuum tube based electronics
    • Analog and digital circuits
    • Logic circuits / PLCs
    • High voltage DC power equipment
    • Vacuum systems (mechanical, cryogenic, and/or diffusion pumps)
    • Electro-mechanical systems
  • Experience required with working around ionizing radiation sources and able to use radiation field survey meters.
  • Requires good mechanical inclination and proficiencies with hand and power tools.
  • Requires excellent technical troubleshooting skills with and without schematics.
  • Requires the ability to perform large scale troubleshooting with system components spread across multiple areas.
  • Must be able to work independently with only general direction, and provide imaginative and practical solutions to a wide range of difficult technical problems.
  • Must have the leadership abilities to effectively direct and manage the technical work of others.
  • Preferred experience working with the following:
    • Pneumatics, hydraulics and water cooling systems.
    • Helium and ultrasonic leak test equipment
    • PLC and HMI programming

Working Conditions:

  • Willingness to work in a plant producing radioactive materials and requiring all employees to participate in safety programs designed to minimize potential and/or actual exposure levels.
  • Occasional exposure to moderate environmental variations, above normal noise levels, and occupational exposure to radiation as permitted and regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
  • Must be willing to wear a variety of personal protective equipment.
  • Willingness to work in a team based environment.
  • Close attention to detail required.
  • May be required to sit or stand for long periods of time while performing duties.
  • Must be able to work outside of regular work hours via a rotating "on-call" schedule
  • Responsibilities also include the ability to lift up to 55 pounds, walk, stand, bend, stoop, push, pull, reach, and climb stairs with or without accommodation.
  • Must possess good hand-eye coordination.
