HDR is seeking an mid-level Environmental Scientist to help expand our services in the Midwest, with a focus on Missouri and Kansas. As a member of the Environmental section, you will support projects primarily within the Missouri / Kansas area with a focus on environmental services for transportation, water resources, and other infrastructure projects. This includes partnering with local and national staff resources, being active in industry organizations, and supporting project pursuits. Primary responsibilities will include NEPA documentation, wetland delineations, Section 404 permitting, and other environmental compliance documentation. This position requires excellent writing and communication skills and will require periodic travel.

Primary Responsibilities

In the role of Environmental Scientist 2, we will count on you to:

  • Work on a wide variety of environmental permitting and natural resources projects as they relate to transportation, water resources, and other infrastructure.
  • Work under the supervision of senior environmental scientists and project managers.
  • Define the level of environmental analysis required.
  • Collect project-related data, which may include research, conducting surveys for listed species, interviews with government agencies and clients, map reviews, field investigations for wetlands, land use, etc
  • Independently prepare written environmental reports including wetland and stream delineation reports, critical areas reports, biological assessments, monitoring reports, etc., and develop mitigation options, plans and documents to address project impacts.
  • Prepare documentation to support NEPA compliance, Endangered Species Act consultation, Clean Water Act Permitting, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Section 10 and 404 permits; and other state/local permits.
  • Assist in preparation for and participation in public information meetings and hearings
  • Perform other related duties as needed

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience in providing a range of environmental review, agency coordination, NEPA compliance, and permitting support for infrastructure projects.
  • Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Social Sciences, Environmental Sciences, planning or closely related field
  • Excellent writing and communication skills (in person, by telephone, and email); ability to be proactive and think on your feet.
  • Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Experience with ArcGIS software and Trimble hardware a plus.
  • Applicants must be detail-oriented, organized, effective communicators, and team players with a strong focus on quality and client service.
  • Must be able to effectively work in minimally supervised and/or unsupervised environments
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference given to candidates local to Kansas City and St. Louis. Experience in Missouri, Kansas, and/or Illinois strongly preferred.
  • Experience with NEPA and agency coordination requirements, including basic training courses.
  • Completion of a 40-hour basic wetland delineation training course, focused on application of the 1987 Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to complete field site visits and record natural resource data in conditions that include sloped terrain, thick vegetation, and inclement weather
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds without assistance
  • Must have a valid Driver's License
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle day or night
  • Overnight travel may be required at times
